                               Selene

I built and built and built.
A tower of mankind's might.
A body made from the finest metal,
And wings that would never melt.
If only Icarus could have been patient.

I wrote and wrote and wrote.
Complex equations and flawless formulas.
A dream dreamt in numbers,
Written in pages laced with Greek.
Archimedes would have been proud.

I searched and searched and searched.
For the fire that mankind never knew.
A giant pool of enraged liquid,
And a spark to summon the angst.
Enough to wake Hephaestus from his sleep.

And so I flew and flew and flew,
Farther than any man had flown before.
To be united with the goddess of moon.
Unaw...

                          The Conversion

Change creeps in,
Cramping up those overworked limbs.
Skin sticks stubbornly to the bones.
Forging a sandpaper-wrapped skeleton.

Hunger finds a home for the night,
And slowly devours it's host.
"You are what you eat", the world says,
And apparently,
Some people are Nothing.

Fatigue puts a coat on,
And takes a walk down the highway.
It slithers in tattered blankets and
makeshift beds,
And lulls the weary to Sleep.

Hope packs it's bags,
And silently sets out in the night.
Making it's way to the Home,
Those feet failed to reach.
Unfulfilled, Undone.

Words line up together,
And fill up a column in a newspaper.
Numbers pass by...

            The Madman & The Flame

I know what the madman knows,
I'm privy to his thoughts.
And so, I walk towards the flame,
For a reason I forgot.

I dance away my desires,
A crowd gathers under the spell.
Naked as the day I was born,
And ignorant just as well.

I unlearn all the opinions and
commandments,
That the world put on my shoulder.
They are but newly acquired, says the madman.
The flame is much, much older.

I cannot name that which burns,
For what burns so bright?
From ashes, it makes a man,
From smoke, a clear insight.

And so I sing, at the top of my voice,
For the entire world to see.
Engulfed slowly and completely,
By the fire, that was once within me.

I know what th...

                          An Open Barter

These are the words I know.
These are the languages I can say them in.
This is the curve of my cursive,
And this, the tip of my pen.
Make what you will out of it.

These are the stories I tell.
These are the morals I can draw from them.
This is the fragrance of my folklore,
And these, my unfinished tales.
Choose an ending of your liking.

These are the songs I sing.
These are the tones I like to sing them in.
This is the pinnacle of my pitch,
And this, the lump in my throat.
Make a melody out of it if you must.

These are the possessions of my being.
Laid out under the stars, for an open barter.
Take something of mine, and leave something of yours in...

                Of Pandemics and Prayers

I woke up in a strange world.
Where the sun shone on empty roads,
And rain fell on uncut grass.
Stray dogs established a settlement,
Under the string of stationary cars.
And swans swam in the silent waters again.

I woke up in a strange world.
Where Time was no longer Money.
An abundance of one couldn't balance the shortage of the other.
And a generation that was prepared to be ready for action when called upon,
Was ever so confusingly called into Inaction.

I woke up in a strange world.
Where families stayed together longer.
The transit from office to home was just a click of a button.
Free concerts were held in balconies,
Everyday as the sun sank.

            A Letter to Myself

And may this find you in the best of health,
In the prime of your life,
In the most sublime state of your mind.

And may this reach you when you least need it,
When you have forgotten you ever wrote this.
When you have finally caught up with time.

And may this, then remind you,
That broken things can always mend,
That the best stories are also the ugliest ones.
That waves always come back to the shore.

So, in this conundrum of space and time,
May this be your unknown treasure,
And may this be my guiding light.
Until we both meet ourselves.

                        The Day I Left

It rained a little the day I left.
If I hadn't left, I wouldn't have known.
Yellow leaflets swayed in the mist,
Separating from the safe, stagnated trees.
Ever searching for the breeze,
That will help them fall in the right places.
If I hadn't left, they wouldn't have either.

It rained a little the day I left.
Just enough,
To wash away the dust that had settled on my dreams.

If this were a movie, the airport would come to a halt. Shadowed by the background music of rickety conveyor belts, a last ditch effort would be met with an easy approval. And amidst the grandeur of gaudy song and dance, two hearts would become one.

If this were an online conversation, digitized bits of broken heart emojis and late night redressals would flood a couple of lifeless smartphones. Texts and self respect would start to stagger as drunk fingers would stop obeying their masters. Until a frustrated press of a button brings down the curtains and blocks the other.

If this were wartime, bombs would fall from the sky, and the basement would reek of Rejection. Air raid sirens would ...

                        An Old House

In an old house, far away from here,
Sunlight would sneak into our bed quietly.
And all of Midas' gold would wane,
Under the glow of your sun-kissed skin.

In an old house, far away from here,
We won't have to get up and leave.
We'll create our own world,
Out of creased bedsheets and cozy blankets.
I'll be the king of leather bound novels,
You'll be the queen of paperback poetry.

In an old house, far away from here,
Coffee cups would get refilled by themselves.
Hozier would never stop singing,
And Time would finally take a break from all this running around.

In an old house, far away from here,
Love will place a 'Do Not Disturb' sign on the door,

I am rejection,
Bleeding out on the thorns of the first rose that I ever bought.

I am elation,
Dancing at the bottom of a vodka shot in the dark.

I am hope,
Adjusting optimism settings on my social networks.

I am envy,
Spying on a child's carefree smile.

I am failure,
Sinking slowly in the sofa after a long day of work.

I am love,
Brewing unknowingly in a shared cup of coffee under the stars

I am regret,
Sneaking around in old photographs and letters.

I am pain,
Screaming in every stitch above my left eyebrow.

I am pride,
Standing tall on the podium for surviving another day.

I am an unfinished Mosaic,
Of pieces old and new.
Not just skin and bones,
I am everything I've been throug...

Shhh..they are singing now!
Of crimson skies and fire-laden winds.
Of tired eyes and broken spirits.
A song that chokes the throat.

Shhh..they are counting now!
A hundred, a thousand, a million.
Categorizing birds, animals, trees, humans.
Souls that end up becoming statistics.

Shhh..they are angry now!
They post, they tweet, they debate.
Fingers are pointed, until there are no hands left to pray.
A Noise that buries the truth.

Shhh..they are sleeping now!
On a bed that hasn't been turned to ashes,
In a house that isn't burning down,
Under a sky that hasn't been devoured by smoke.

Shhh..let them sleep!
For maybe reality is just a bad dream after all.

                   New Year's Wishlist

Bring us a new decade,
And we'll decorate it with bells of optimism.
Shoving the past under the carpet,
We'll stomp our feet and sing 'auld lang syne',
Just to make sure it doesn't come up again.

Bring us a new slate,
And we'll start writing new stories again.
With the taste of fresh chalk on our lips,
We'll edit our endings and exclude our sorrows.
Just to make it a tale worth retelling.

Bring us a new muse,
And we'll challenge immortality itself.
With our paintings, our songs, our words,
We'll etch our beloved throughout the world.
Just to put a time stamp on love.

Bring us a new dawn,
And with it, bring us a renewed soul.

                  Me, Myself, and I

I haven't sat with myself lately.
Me, myself, and I have grown apart.
In another world, I would have more time,
In another time, I would care less for the world.

I haven't turned a page lately.
Rumi gathers dust on my bedside.
He is no stranger to longing, and Shams knows this to be true.
For what is one more speck of dust to a desert?

I haven't questioned lately.
Afraid of unearthing what I might have buried within.
I've seen too many voices being subdued nowadays,
Enough to justify subduing my own.

I haven't been myself lately.
And my Self seems to be fine with it.
It flips to the next page, and holds out the pen,
Pleading someone else to finish wr...

                        WORRY 101

You see, that's the thing about Worry, my love,
It's addictive.
You find yourself tuning into it,
The moment you are alone.
Like an unending novel you can't wait to complete.

From one scenario to the other,
Your mind unwinds down the familiar spiral.
There's always another worry to worry about.
There's always more string than pearls.

You see, that's the thing about Worry, my love,
It's infinite.

It doesn't require a rooftop balcony,
Or a designated area.
Public Worrying isn't an offence. Not yet.
There's nothing to purchase,
Nothing to deal.

You see, that's the thing about Worry, my love,
It's convenient.

So I could go on and on ...

         The Act of Living

Curtains close, and we walk back home.
For a while, there shall be no more acting.
We've been awake for far too long.
Let the claps die down,
And let sleep follow.

Our eyes are tired of facing the spotlight,
Our feet long for a step that isn't choreographed.
Our costumes reek of nervous nights and copious wines,
Our tongues are tired of speaking words that aren't ours.

The carpet rolls back, and we leave the stage.
For a while, the lights shall remain off.
We've not been ourselves for too long.
Let the crowd dissipate slowly,
And let forgetfulness follow.

The cleaners come in now,
And start sweeping away our Aura.
The trash can is full of aspirations and aceto...

                       The Price of Gold

Golden is the sun,
Golden the fields beneath.
Golden the swaying grain,
Gold as far as the eye can see.

A lone guardsman sits amidst this treasure,
Bare-Chested, barren hands.
You wouldn't believe even if I swore,
He owns All the gold of these lands.

His palace is all but a room.
The queen and two princesses wait.
For the emperor is a slave to all that gold.
A truly unfortunate checkmate.

The gold is useless unless sold,
To the market he now marches.
Sets up shop between the pillars of politics and poverty,
It's madness underneath those arches.

He comes with gold and leaves with pennies,
And no one has a clue.
he must sell gold to make...

                           The Casino

The sound of chips hitting the table scares you.
One man's jingle is another man's alarm.
The roulette spins,
And takes your head on the ride as well.
By the time it stops,
You have forgotten why you came here.

You wonder why they call it 'dealing' the cards.
What exactly are they asking for in return?
One man's trade is another man's dilemma.
You fold once again,
Fingers crossed, hoping you wouldn't have won.

The dice rub together and ignite probability.
One man's chance is another man's certainty.
You know too well numbers have never been your friends.
So you hold the bet,
Until your chips start to sink in the skin of your palms.

I build myself a cage.
With bars made of indecisiveness.
I chain myself to the wall.
With a series of iron-laden excuses.

I set a mousetrap for myself,
And use anxiety instead of cheese.
I drive myself to the edge,
And let panic take the wheel.

I dig myself a pit.
With a spade made from over exaggeration.
I erect a barbed wire fence,
With shards of broken dreams.

I do all this silently, gradually,
So as to not cause alarm.
Lest others might take notice and wake me up.

Had I known any better,
I would have stayed away from myself.

             Of Eclipses and Empty Spaces

You used to be fascinated with the sky.
Pointing out constellations on a whim.
Blurting out random trivia,
"99.98% of space is a void"
And I would be left thinking,
About how emptiness can be it's own wonder.

"When we see the stars, we only see the past", you said one night.
"It could be a black hole right now,
But we wouldn't know for years.
All we would see is a warm twinkle in the night,
Telling us that everything is fine."

I would realise much later,
That people were no different.
We would see smiling faces, perfect plans.
Telling us everything is fine.
Hiding the implosion that has taken place within.
Covering up the black hole that w...

              Leaving

Leaving isn't that simple.
It isn't a single act of boarding a flight.
It is getting off at the other end.
It isn't a final, teary hug.
It is the lump in the throat afterwards.

Leaving isn't that obvious.
It isn't the squeak of suitcase wheels.
It is the pulling away of all that baggage.
It isn't the final twist of the key.
It is the cold, steel lock on the door.

Leaving isn't that instantaneous.
It isn't a final selfie.
It is the framed photo in a new room.
It isn't just waking up and heading out.
It is the empty bed.

Leaving isn't about what you left behind.
It is about what you kept.
Leaving isn't when you leave.
It is knowing that you have left.

                         Life in Numbers

A half eaten sandwich.
Three unfilled gym membership forms.
A dozen unseen movie climaxes.
A hundred avoided storms.

Two years with a cricket kit bag,
That now lies buried in the basement.
Three years slept embracing a familiar frame.
Five years, still trying to find a replacement.

Twelve chapters of an unfinished novel,
Four megabytes that no longer get used.
Ten hours of coding that I couldn't do any more.
Two parents that weren't amused.

A decade of stumbling on social media.
Three hundred and twenty three "friends" I don't quite know.
Six unbooked tickets to my grandmother's house.
One for every year I didn't go.

Twenty six trips around the ...

I have this dream,
Where the train comes to a halt,
At a familiar station.

The sandpaper voice of the tea sellers.
The smiling morning dew decorating a cold steel bench.
The smell of freshly cut cucumber.
The lingering taste of deja vu.

My feet subconsciously carry me,
To the station bookstore,
Where I come across a familiar face,
Immersed in the pages of Malgudi Days.

Gray lines run through jet black tresses,
As if someone highlited their favourite lines of a poem.
Wrinkles stand guard along her cheeks
As if protecting the secrets which those lips had known.
Fingers carefully caress the book,
As if turning the pages would turn back the time.

                          The Fast Lane

The city measures speed in sweat drops per hour.
It's pulse is the rapid passing by of recurring streetlights.

"The Hustle is Real", we write,
In noisy neon signs and bullying billboards.
The young boys sleeping underneath cannot read,
But they know it's true nonetheless.

The city measures patience in traffic jams.
In the sparsely flowing metal sea of red and yellow
It's meditation is the repeated chanting of car horns and curses.

"It gets worse every year", we say,
In our surrendering, unattached voices.
The road beneath swears vengeance.
Getting back at us, one muddy pothole at a time.

The city demands pace in the marathon of sleep deprived eyes....

We are secret savages,
Sleeping uncomfortably in our concrete houses.
Tossing and turning, eyes scanning the ceiling,
Searching for a starlit sky.

We are boorish bodies,
Grinding against the chisel of time.
Polishing the surface, blunting the edges,
Trying to be a perfect fit in an imperfect puzzle.

We are vacant vagabonds,
Longing for a sense of belonging.
Travelling relentlessly on varied paths,
Knowing deep down, that home will always be where we are not.

We are morbid miracles,
Trying to make sense of a magic trick.
Questioning and discovering the mystery,
Existing, as a story that writes itself.

                       A Scenery

You stack up some rocks,
And pile them up as high as the clouds.

Then, you poke a hole in the horizon,
Until a river begins to bleed.

You take out some salty stars,
And sprinkle them onto the purple canvas of the sky.

After that, you switch on the breeze,
Till the rustling leaves begin to speak.

You swallow half the moon,
And smile with the crescent of your lips.

You scatter some crickets and the occasional owl,
For the sake of surround sound.

And finally, you find a hand to hold,
And a heart to beat beside yours.

That's all it takes to conjure a scenery.
That's all it takes, to know the Universe.

                       Of Love And Loss

Love was found on a 6 inch screen.
By the algorithmic magic of fingers swiping right.

Love was found on the sofa,
When a certain Forrest Gump opened a box of chocolates.

Love was found at the bottom of the bottle,
Stolen from a party that was too loud for us.

Love was found in the dictionary,
Somewhere between "loyalty" and "loneliness".

Love was found inside a strange town,
With flashy neon signs and shady alleyways.

Love was found immersed in the pages of poetry,
In words that had been uttered centuries ago.

Love was found, and lost just as easily.
Until slowly, the heart merged both together.

And now, only once it is lost,
Does the heart rea...

A man who doesn't understand,
Doesn't rationalize, doesn't let go.

My dust-ridden aspirations under the carpet.
Insisting on an open display of delayed desires.

I dream the dreams of a stubborn man.
Dreams that crave disruption and chaos.
They demand madness and a heavy heart,
A full frontal attack on the status quo.

The vocabulary only goes so far.

Shall I compare thee to a summer's day,
Like Shakespeare did eons ago.
Or shall i douse you with the flames,

Is this the language you speak?
Or have all my intricate words gone to waste?

What words shall I conjure for you?
Is 26 a sufficient number?
What can I say about love,

Time ran faster than me,
And left me behind in the past.
Who knew a race was being run?
Amidst the seemingly simple process of Living.

Realising what was at stake,
My naive heart pumped blood like a maniac.
My ignorant lungs dealt oxygen and carbon dioxide at a frantic pace.
The onlookers called it hyperventilation.
But who knew, a race was being run.

I ran as fast as my limbs would carry me,
Playing catch up to all the moments I had lost.
Burning through my youth,
Like a thousand matches lighting up the nitrate reels of my childhood.

There's foundations to be laid,
And cement to be churned.

There's a skeleton of steel,

And there are men who are just machines.
There's cranes, rivets and drills,
There's a deafness in all the noise.

There's the ever present river,

There's a battle between water and concrete,
And there's mist for days to come.

There's a bridge to be made,
There's land to be created where it shouldn't be.
